Today, we’re shining the dressCODE spotlight on Katie. We are thrilled to introduce you to this closet curator, wardrobe stylist, and personal shopper!

Katie will have you feeling like Cher Horowitz in Clueless with her computerized closet, except it will be in the palm of your hand. She’ll help you find sustainable brands in timeless styles that compliment your body shape and skin color. Then pre-plan looks that are easy to access for a Zoom business meeting, social distanced first date, or whatever special event you have coming up on your calendar.

So let’s dive into a Q & A with Katie Carriero!

Tell us a little more about your experience as a stylist…

I’ve styled everywhere from independent movie sets to department stores for brands as diverse as Bloomingdale's, Nike, and Forever 21 - photoshoots, armies of mannequins, and even a guest for Kim & Kanye’s wedding...it’s been a lot of schlepping garment bags and a few steamer burns over the past 10 years!

But, it was my time as a Personal Stylist for Nordstrom that really taught me the transformational power of clothes. Dressing women and men through the changes of their lives: new jobs, new bodies, weddings, even funerals - how meaningful it was to help them look and feel their best through it all - solidified my passion for dressing real people.

What is your signature look?

You’ll usually find me in a vintage band tee (my collection is my pride and joy), some form of leather and denim with boots.

How do you determine a client's personal style?

It’s my superpower! When I meet someone I get a feel for their personality then translate it visually.

Where do you typically source rare pieces?

We are spoiled with high-end fashion especially vintage here in L.A., What Comes Around Goes Around has a great selection and an especially welcoming vibe for shoppers. If I’m looking for something specific, I’ll reach out to dealers directly. Online, I search via gem.app and check with a few of my favorite Poshmark sellers.

Which current trend are you excited to incorporate this Winter?

Matching rib-knit sets I can #WFH in, then easily layer a leather blazer to pick up take out. Also, cozy cardigan + cami twin sets a la Katie Holmes.

What are the best items to buy vintage or secondhand?

Handbags! Not only will you pay less for a designer piece but the popular styles of today are all based on the classics anyway.

Vintage outerwear is of considerably better quality than today’s and holds so much character (like someone’s embroidered initials or a memo pad left in the pocket). Also, right now 80’s and 90’s silhouettes and trends like leather are IN and easy to find in your local thrift store: eco and budget-friendly!

For anyone new-to vintage I love the ease of a dress, no styling required, just add modern accessories.

Where are your favorite budget-friendly vintage shops in LA?

The Melrose Trading Post on Sundays is a great place to score especially t-shirts and denim. Magnolia Park is a hidden gem (it’s where the costume designers source) with a great variety of shops and a relaxed vibe with awesome coffee shops and restaurants. My favorite one-stop-shop would be the vintage racks at Wasteland.

How do you deal with clients who are reluctant to change and struggle to let go of the old to make space for the new?

It usually doesn’t take much convincing because living with less feels so freeing. But, if they’re struggling, I’ll have them try on a great outfit, and then one I know represents what they can live without, and usually, they’ll feel the difference instantly.
