Today, we’re shining the dressCODE spotlight on Melynda. We are thrilled to introduce you to this fierce fashionista, wardrobe stylist, and personal shopper!

Melynda has impeccable taste with a showstopper style. She takes a fearless approach to fashion that will help you step out of your comfort zone, add some color to your wardrobe, and teach you fresh ways to style the clothes in your existing closet.

So let’s dive into a Q & A with Melynda!

Tell us a little more about your experience as a stylist...

I've been styling for about 12 years, and it's a really long story but I basically work as a fashion stylist for fashion photoshoots, costume designer for TV, film and commercials, personal stylist & also do custom designs for clients as well. Oh, and I also have a vintage shop in a fashion showroom in downtown LA's Fashion District.

What is your signature look?

My signature look is color, pattern, and metallic. If it's bold, I'm there. In other words, I am hard to miss! However, I do believe in having a sense of balance, so my style is still conservative in terms of silhouette and I would describe my personal style as high fashion conserva-funka-sexy.

How do you determine a client's personal style?

I like to get to know my client's taste/lifestyle as well as secret fashion desires that he/she has felt she/he could never pull off and then teach that person how it can be done. It's important to really represent their innermost self.

Where do you typically source rare pieces?

I scour everywhere, from Etsy to high-end resale stores, all the way to Saks Off 5th. I also subscribe to the most random email lists so I can stay in the know about current designers. If someone wants something really one of a kind, I can also be found wandering the fashion district near my shop/office.

Which current trend are you excited to incorporate this Winter?

I don't generally follow trends, but I am excited that boots are becoming more widely available in shorter heel heights and that we are trending toward more practical heels in general. I really want to snag some low-heeled thigh-high boots for winter.

What are the best items to buy vintage or secondhand?

Some of the best items to get secondhand or vintage are designer accessories. Definitely. Hands down. Full stop. You're going to get the most bang for your buck this way, search for items that are more classic and not "it" items. Much like a car, most of these items depreciate pretty much immediately, and it's best to get them a season or two behind. If you get an extremely classic item, it will also hold its value over time and you can recoup your expense later by selling it.

Where are your favorite budget-friendly vintage shops in LA?

Mine, of course! But also, Squaresville, Crossroads, and Wasteland. I know too many, but those are the ones to hit up if you're in need of a good mix of modern/vintage resale and also a mix of high/low (to me, the best way to go is high & low).

How do you deal with clients who are reluctant to change and struggle to let go of the old to make space for the new?

Clients who are reluctant to change and struggle to let go of things sometimes need a little bit more empathy or deeper psychological prodding. What I mean by that is asking them (in a gentle way) "what is scaring you about getting rid of this? Is it sentimental? Are you afraid you won't be able to replace this?" This is a great way to start a genuine conversation and move forward together toward a common goal.

What are the top 5 wardrobe staples every woman should own?

The top 5 wardrobe staples every woman should own are:

  1. Black lamb leather pants

  2. Longline blazer (in any color, honestly, as long as you feel AMAZING in it)

  3. High-end statement earrings

  4. A pair of high waisted medium wash jeans

  5. A nice silk blouse

These can all be worn together but they can also be mixed and matched and dressed up or down. It’s important that the client feels powerful and amazing in them.

*Bonus: black patent boots and a nice coat- those are lifetime items!

Which piece of clothing will never go out of style?

A classic trench coat in any color. Bonus points for leather.
